The process-words — chao, cattening, throughflow — never drift; they mean the same thing in every document. The map is chosen for the listener and thrown away: reach for the river with a geologist, the smelter with a mythographer, the flask with a physicist. Below, that rule is made a control instead of a habit — pick a map and the imagery across this page re-weights toward it, while every claim it illustrates stays exactly as marked. All fixed terms are defined at /glossary/.
The volcano is the forcing — the surplus that must be spent. The stream is the recording structure, integrating and recording the forces that built its bed. The atmosphere is the coupling medium: one structure's dissipated throughflow becomes another's gradient, a mixing layer all sides alter and are altered by.
| Fixed process | Maps to |
|---|---|
| The forcing (drives chao up) | the volcano — the surplus that must be spent |
| Generating (the recording structure) | the stream — integrates and records the forces that built its bed |
| The coupling medium | the atmosphere — a mixing layer all sides alter and are altered by |
| Persistence-filtering / cattening | the canyon — the channel the surplus carves, foreclosing other paths |
| An exogenous threshold event | the monsoon bursting the dam |
| Why there is surplus at all | the accursed share (Bataille) — excess that must be spent, not merely may be |
Two things have to be said whenever this map is used, or it over-promises. A single stream underdetermines the volcano; an ensemble triangulates it — a drainage network carries real information about tectonics, but not all of it. And the Goldilocks swap: Earth isn't just right because it's mild. It's just right because it sits in the narrow throughflow window — enough drive to carve, not so much it never wets.
Mars extinct. Venus too violent to wet. Mercury no rain at all. Europa and Enceladus: stream-without-monsoon, permanently pre-life rather than failed life. Earth the rare conjunction.
Goldilocks sorts worlds by mildness, on one axis, at one moment. This sorts by coupling, on three axes, across a history — and it is a genuine rival account of habitability, not a picture layered on top of one.
Eris — the Purge. Change, environment, information destruction. The draw that discloses a predicate. The Purge doesn't create; it reveals what was already true of a population by removing everything for which it wasn't — which is why extinction is constructive here rather than merely subtractive.
Hephaestus — generating. The imperfect toolmaker: microbes, viruses, proteins. Information creation by combination. The imperfection is the mechanism, not a flaw in the metaphor — a perfect toolmaker produces no variants, so fidelity below unity is what writes tickets. So the pairing isn't destruction versus creation; it's imperfect copying versus the draw, and the lameness is load-bearing.
The party is the high-chao state itself — many outcomes live at once. The golden apple is the catalyst: one small thing thrown into a settled party that forces the improbable to resolve, not by adding energy but by adding a forced choice.
The guard, load-bearing: a cattening is not Pandoric. A cattening reduces entropy — collapses, orders, ends. A Pandoric apple floods it — opens, forces novelty. Opposite operations on the same axis. The pageant is the same apple, opposite outcome: "to the fairest" forces one winner and a war; "fairest at X, at Y, at Z" celebrates many and the party escalates instead. The only variable is the selection rule — and it isn't the nice option, it's the dominant one: cooperative networks beat selfish replicators under sustained throughflow with mixing.
Eris is never invited — she is the complement of the guest list. If she were invited she'd be inside, and then she couldn't be the outside, so she couldn't be Eris. An exogenous threshold event is Eris: outside the list, uninvitable — the impact, the vent, the cosmic ray. An endogenous one is a guest who becomes Eris: the insider whose own act turns them into the outside. The selection imagery is deliberately Artemis, not Ares — the cull and the hunt, not war or slaughter.
Two rules this layer must not break. Never let one image become canonical — the apple and the feather, always; refusing to pick one picture is the anti-reification rule applied to the imagery itself. And imagery never carries a confidence mark; claims always do, which is why the three bands above sit visually apart from every claim-bearing page on this site.
Two further maps exist only as stubs and aren't built yet: the smelter (Iron John) — gold from a wound in the rock, still hot, never stopping, the source kept permanently off-page — and the drainage network, reading tectonics off rivers as directly as reading physics off biology. Neither changes any claim; they'd just be a fourth and fifth way to say the same fixed things.
